Some of the less technical business owners we interact with often come to us with some questions and confusion about what Google My Business is and can do for them? In some cases, they’re not even sure if GMB is one and the same as Google itself. I’m going to clear up some confusion and also give some insights on the GMB lowdown.
Do you need a Google account for a Google My Business?
If you have a Gmail account, you have a Google My Business account. Actually, you have the ability to access any Google property they offer to the public. Your Google Email is your golden key!
Here’s a shortlist of some of our favorites that you should be utilizing:
1. Google My Business
2. Google Search Console
3. Google Analytics
4. Google Trends (Though you don’t need an account to utilize this tool.)
5. Google Calendar
6. Google Meet
7. Google Maps
All of these tools, and more, are available for “free” for you if you have a Google mail (a.k.a. Gmail) account.
Is Google My Business worth it?
The ability to create free listings for businesses to enter their details and access their customers is something any service-area businesses should utilize to help boost their organic search. Especially in a local area.
Even if you aren’t a brick-and-mortar business locked down to a single Geo, setting up a profile with a business address will allow clients and customers to leave business reviews and take customer actions like creating user-generated content such as business photos is something that will increase your search rankings and expand your search presence on their own.
Why wouldn’t you utilize a free platform that helps get your business info out there? We all know that word of mouth is and probably always will be the most effective marketing you can get, and collecting customer testimonials puts that word of mouth on a billboard online!
So yes, it’s worth it. No matter which angle you look at GMB, it’s beneficial for your SEO strategies as well as your overall marketing strategy. If you don’t have one, set it up today… and if you don’t know how, contact us and we’ll get you squared away!
How often should I post to Google My Business profile?
There is no exact science on this yet, but we call tell you that the more often you use Google’s tools, the more Google will reward you for doing so.
Google wants to own the internet and when you, or customers that leave a review, are using their platform by updating your business listing or even searching or clicking your address on Google Maps, it sends signals that people are searching for you and that you are optimizing their ability to keep traffic in their ecosystem.
For this, you will be rewarded!
If you can put new posts on your GMB profile daily that would be great! Use your phone to add photos (that will automatically be Geo stamped with your location data). Update holiday business hours. List your products or services. Any step you can take towards keep your Google My Business profile updated constantly will only benefit you.
But, we know that life doesn’t always work out that way and you have a company to run… in that case, once a week or at minimum once a month, you should be creating new content and updating your GMB profile.
This will show Google that you actually care and it will also be expanding your possible search terms you could rank for as well.
Your online presence is one of the most essential marketing tools you can cultivate in today’s connected world. Be sure to put in the effort to increase your website or brand visibility any way you can.
The tools are free (though they are monetizing your data… nothing in life is truly free…), might as well use them to capture the attention of as many potential customers as possible!
Let the search engine bring them to you!
